Do you ever see, hear, touch or smell something and out of the blue it makes you recall something?  I seem to do that all the time.  I'm not sure whether its because I'm getting older and therefore have more memories or if I'm just susceptible to good memories.

Two sounds that get me always have squeaks.  One is footsteps in the snow at night.  The snow does that wonderful crunching, squeaking sound and I'm right back on the dark streets of my hometown, walking to the library at night or walking home from a babysitting job very late.  The other is the squeak of basketball shoes on thecourt.  See, there I am, either sitting in the middle of the pep squad or way up in the corner in the Pep Band, playing "On to Victory!"  On some occasions, I'm out on the gym floor, marching in the band, remembering which way to go and when in order to spell out "Trojans!"

Drinking a Pepsi always reminds me of my childhood, especially the family reunions on the Engle side.  One of Mom's brothers-in-law had the Pepsi distribution hub with his family.  We were all loyal to Pepsi back then, and guess who always provided soft drinks for the family reunions.  Yup.

Hearing a big bass drum, I'm automatically a little girl with all her cousins following Grandpa around the barnyard in a parade for the Singleton family reunion.  Later, the fife (my dad) and drum corps (Grandpa and Uncle Herby) will play.

What takes you back to your childhood?

I think your opening line sums it up pretty well. It goes without saying that the older one gets the more experience one gathers, and with each and every experience gained there is always residues – not always nice and fluffy – but residues nonetheless which have the power to surface and make you remember the occasion, whatever that is. I get it all the time.

Chlorine in the pool. I believe it or not was a swimmer from 1st grade through my senior year of high school!

Nothing takes me back to my childhood. Instead somethings, especially music, take me back to my 20’s but never my childhood.

Nothing ever takes me back to my childhood either. And I am glad, because that was a terrible time in my life.

That’s such a shame. I hate to think of you as an unhappy child.

This happens to me a lot. It is the only thing I am grateful for in old age.
